Personal History | John was born at United Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, Texas on June 20th, 2355 to David and Maricella Pearce. He was the oldest of five children and the only son born to the couple. His father was a rancher and his mother, prior to getting married, was a teacher. John grew up on the family homestead, a cattle ranch covering approximately 450,000 acres named the Caprock Ranch. According to his parents, he learned to ride a horse almost before he learned to walk. He learned to hunt and fish on the ranch and by the age of 12 had become extremely proficient with a phaser as well as ancient percussion firearms. He also grew up hearing tales of exploration from his grandfather Martinez, a retired Starfleet captain, and this created a desire for him to attend Starfleet Academy. John’s mother Maricella made the decision to homeschool John and his sisters until they had each completed 8th grade, after which time he attended John Jay High School in San Antonio. He graduated with honors in 2373 and immediately applied for admission to Starfleet Academy. His application was accepted and he was admitted to what would become the graduating class of 2377 in the fall of 2373. John’s original plan had been to pursue a career in command as his grandfather had done, but his aptitude tests (along with a little bright-eyed cadet named Peri Valeri) convinced him that he should pursue a career in the medical field. Soon after their meeting, he and Peri began dating and continued to date throughout their first three years at the Academy. During the break between their third and fourth years, they decided to get married. After graduation, they both entered Starfleet Medical where they earned their specialty degrees – orthopedics for him and psychology for her. After their graduation from Starfleet Medical in 2381 they were both assigned to the USS Foristell. After two years aboard the Foristell, they were notified that they were being transferred once again. Unfortunately this time they were not being assigned together. He was being assigned to Starbase 57 and she was sent to the USS Tianimen Square. They maintained a long-distance relationship for almost 3 years but ultimately as happens with many long-distance relationships, the strain proved to be too much and in 2386 Peri filed for a dissolution of their marriage which was granted in 2387, by which time John was serving aboard the USS Columbia. In 2388, John was offered a chance to open a private practice on a planet called Taran 2. He thought this would be a great career opportunity so he submitted his resignation to Starfleet and quickly relocated. When he arrived at Taran 2 he quickly discovered that the situation was not what he had expected. Instead of being a Federation colony as he had expected, what he found was a mining camp, and what they needed was a company doctor. It wasn’t what he’d wanted at all, but since he had resigned his commission, he decided to try and make the best of it. And he did. For four long arduous years he treated all manner of broken bones and diseases including miner’s lung, heat stroke, Talaxian flu and even a couple of cases of Rigellian fever. All in all a boring and repetitive existence. So in 2392 he decided to do something about it – he petitioned for readmission to Starfleet. He was readmitted later that year and assigned to USS Dudley W. Morton with his previous rank of Lieutenant where he remained until his transfer to the USS Wood in 2394. Then, in 2395 he was offered the position of Chief Medical Officer aboard the USS Shanghai, along with a promotion to Lieutenant Commander. |
