Personal History | Christian Avery Barrett was born to a Terran father, Silas Barrett, and a Betazoid mother, Cora Brite. The pair were unmarried at the time of Christian's birth, making Christian unclaimed as heir to the House of Brite's vast assets. Despite their marriage when Chris reached the age of two, he remained unclaimed by Betazoid laws. Six years after his birth, Cora had a second child, Caleb, who was recognized as the heir apparent to the assets held by the House of Brite. As one can imagine, this instigated a rift of jealousy between the boys early in their lives, with Caleb being treated as a first class royal while Chris remained almost a third class citizen. Even in public, Chris was treated differently by his mother, causing resentment to blossom in the child at a very early age. The difference between the boys was not nearly as apparent to their father, who loved them equally despite their difference in Betazoid culture. This remained the only constant between them as Caleb received the best food, care and education while Chris often felt forgotten, getting the leftover food from his brother's table, the only care came from his father and the education he received, he taught himself. Because of this lack of formal education, Chris moved from one subject to another rapidly, creating an attention deficit disorder in the boy. It should come as no surprise then that Christian immediately applied to Starfleet Academy once he reached the age of sixteen. Like most applicants of that age, he was declined admission but given encouragement through his letter of declination to redouble his studies and reapply the following year. Applying himself whole-heartedly to his studies, Chris did exactly what the Academy letter recommended and studied harder than ever before. Through this effort, he overcame, in part, his attention disorder. The following year, on his seventeenth birthday, Chris received his pre-acceptance letter. He had managed to pass the written test, but was required to pass the psychological test which could only be administered at the Academy itself. With a sad goodbye to his father (and his father alone), Chris took his meager possessions and boarded a transport for Earth. Despite the difficulty of the psychological examination, a test of his mental will power in regard to his attention deficit disorder and a test which revealed his jealousy toward his brother and resentment toward his mother, Chris passed the psychological test and was admitted to the Academy. The next four years were the most difficult years of his life. Reborn with a new freedom, Chris found his voice and equally discovered that he hid his own insecurities behind quips and jokes. It was an easy out to make those around him laugh. Equally hard was making friends among his fellow students. After years of being treated as if he didn't exist, Chris had to overcome that tendency to remain quiet in large groups. Chris graduated Starfleet Academy at the age of twenty-one. As expected, only his father attended his graduation with platitudes of responsibilities regarding his mother and younger brother. It was on that day that he resolved not to return to Betazed under any circumstances. After four years at the Academy, Chris received his orders for his first duty station, Engineering Officer aboard the USS Guinevere. Under the command of Captain Saren zh'Thani, Chris excelled in his new duties. Without his knowledge, Captain zh'Thani recommended Chris for a position on the USS Juno, a posting which could utilize his genius, broaden his understanding of life and Starfleet, and make him a more refined officer. |
