1,140 words; about a 6 minute read

Mission: [JM New Haven] S1 E2 A New Haven
Location: SB New Haven
Timeline: MD001 1600

John was in his office going through a lot of paper work Then he came across a pad with the file of Captain Risa. He looked his chronometer. It was the new fighter pilot for the Ottawa. Ellie wanted to make the Ottawa more war ready, know what they were facing. And as the general director for that he of course had to take care of it.

"Computer, has Captain Risa already arrived on the base?" He asked waiting for a respond.

"Captain Risa has arrived."

John thought a moment and then reached for his com badge. =^"Captain Risa, please report to the Flight and Marines director's office." =^=

Sandra had not only just arrived but hadn't quite got her gear settled before she nearly jumped out of her skin. 'Damn com badge! Like to scare me half to death. Jeezz he is fast', she mumbled. =^= Understood sir...Risa out! =^= Lugging her gear with her she mamaged to make it to the director's office and hit the chime.

"Come in!" John said as he was getting up to go to the replicator. As Risa walked in to the door. "Ah, Captain Risa, I was about to get some tea, can I get you something?" He walked over to the replicator and waited a moment there for a response.

Sandra entered and sat in one of the chairs. "Thank you sir, but the pleasure is all mine. I was a bit shocked when they told me of my new rank. I guess the years of flying actually paid off", she said chuckling. "A cup of Earl Grey will do Sir", she said. She watched the captain to see his reaction when she asked for the tea.

John got the tea and put her cup in front of her. He had a fruity tea himself with sugar. He looked to her as she didn't touched her tea. "Well it is hot." He said with a grin. "Don't let it get cold." He stirred in the tea. "So have you served under a marine before?"

"Yes captain, it was a good experience for me to learn how the marines do their jobs. Most were good enough to help me aclimate to their way of life. It left a good impression on me", Sandra said, sipping her tea. "I assume that it will be somewhat the same here?", she added.

"You mean colonel," John said. "I can understand the red uniform is fooling you, I do have a marine rank pip on my collar." He pointed to the rank pip on his collar. "I am not offended however," He added as he took a sip from his tea. "My sister, colonel Ijaan, has asked if I could talk to you first. I am the sector's marine and air group director. Right now the Ottawa isn't fitted for fighters yet, so you'll be spending some time with my unit for a while." He explained, while smiling.

"Oh.....", Sandy said, looking a bit perplexed. "I was under the impression she had been fitted already. Well no matter, I am just happy to be here. Colonel, what can you tell me about your sister? I have heard about the mission of the old Ottawa but I really don't quite understand the circumstances surrounding this mention of a *pauses*.....presence?", she added.

John thought a moment to think about where to start and then told, "Nine years ago Colonel Ijaan disappeared, back then she was the first officer of the USS Ottawa, the original Ottawa. A steamrunner class starship. It was under the command of Captain Culbertson. My sister doesn't talk much about her time there, but she did keep detailed logs. What I learned from that, was that the original Ottawa was taken in to an alternate, which she nicknamed the Paranormal Universe. It's much like our own universe, but also very much different. Starfleet there is farther advanced then ours. Federation space reaches farther and wider then we could ever imagine here. But to all that is one down side. And as the nickname does suspect, the universe's paranormal energy is much higher than here. Which means there are much more paranormal activity there than here. It's one of the biggest problems there. There is one entity the encountered the first year they were there. The name of this entity was Umbra. A powerful being, more powerful then the Paranormal unit there has ever encountered. It was difficult to beat this creature. Ellie's alternate counter part only saw one option to safe her crew and that of Ellie's. She sacrificed herself. Ellie believes that she may brought the creature known as Umbra back here." He took a sip from his tea. "Does that explain it?"

Sandra's face changed and drained. "Wow! Yeah I guess it does explain a lot. It might make life a bit more sureal if she indeed she brought it with her", Sandy said raising an eyebrow. "Would this entity have the power to control minds?", she asked.

John shrugged. "I understand this entity has controlled my sister's body, but not long enough to be a thread. But I do believe she is under medical observation as long as she is at the base."

"I shall keep this in mind Colonel. I hope that this entity can be made to leave her befor it has taken complete control of her. If I can help in any way, don't hesitate to ask", she said.

"Agreed, captain, in the meantime I would like you to go down to the planet a familiarize yourself with the fighters," John said. "A wing fighter director will be arriving at the base soon. When they arrive they will take office on the base. We will then prepare for a unit for you. For now, take you time here a bit. The crew is on shore leave right now."

"Thank you Colonel I believe I will do some shopping here before I take my fighter down. Maybe a good holodeck exercise before I leave as well", Sandra said smiling.

"Sounds good, Captain, dismissed!" He stated with a smile on his face. "Oh and if you need anything, don't hesitate to call me."

"I won't hesitate Colonel.....oh Colonel, before I leave, how about having a drink with me? I'm buying", Sandra said smiling.

John got up. "Absolutely not." He said. He almost sounded offended. "I am buying." He got up from behind his desk. "And we're going to Nidria and Dan's." He smiled and winked to her. "I also could use a bite to eat and Dan makes some terrific pastas."

Surprised, Sandra could not argue, "Of course Colonel I would be delighted to eat pasta. I love a good lasagne", she said.
