T'para smiled to herself slightly as the doors opened and she stepped into the ships medbay. Even if she'd been here for a short while it was already beginning to feel like home. She nodded politely to a few people on her shift as she made her way towards the head office. Pressing the door alarm she waited patiently for it to open. She had the blood samples from her family in a biological container clipped to her waist. She hoped the medical staff at command would have sent over any info on her mates condition.
T'San was reading some files when she heard the door chime. "Come in."
Stepping into the room T'para gave her boss a polite smile. " Hello, T'San i have my family's blood work. " She stated as she held up the medical container.
T'San got up and took the medical container. "Ah yes." She put them on her desk. She sat down. "Oh by the way, I got the information from star fleet medical." She tapped her fingers on her desk. "So, T'Para, what is your specialty?"
" Speciality of general surgery along with my nursing degree. I also have my qualifications for away team felid medics position." The hybrid replied proudly.
"Oh that's nice. I knew that of course, I was just trying to make conversation I hope you don't mind." She got up. "I am not a hybrid human vulcan, I am full vulcan. I was trained with logic and to supress my emotions. But as you suspected, I am one of those vulcans who has their emotions too close to the surface. My husband is part human, and he wasn't raised as a vulcan. So how is it like for you, you seem more human then any hybrids I have met?"
" Rather simple explanation. I'll openly admit i don't know much about vulcans outside fo medical and the more common basis of are culture. Me and my twin sister were found abandoned outside a police station in San Fransico. Never found out who our parents were so we were raised at the orphanage until we reached adulthood. " The hybrid explained
"You never wondered about your real heritage? Maybe check if you have some family?" T'San asked.
" Oh we've had our DNA checked. We didn't find a match with anyone in the archives of both starfleet, earth vulcan. I stopped believing we'd ever find out after i joined the academy and met my night in red armour. " T'para said leaning against the desk slightly.
"I see," T'San leaned against the desk and folded her hands. "Must've been hard on you and your twinsister. Growing up without parents, never finding out who your family is. But I can't believe there is not a single relative out there. Unless two entire family lines of humans and vulcans were eradicated without anyone noticing. You should not give up. If you like, I could help you if you want."
" It was, but we overcame it. I'd appreciate any help you'd have to offer though. It would be nice to find out if we did have any family out there even if was just to ask them why we were abandoned. Still, do you want to have a look at the blood samples?" The hybrid replied.
"Oh yes, of course." T'San took up the container again. "I will go prepare this, you want to join me?"
"Of course. It would be nice if we could fix this whole mess. That whole incident with those two collectives was a few days i will be happy to forget." The hybrid said as she followed the doctor.
"Eh...two collectives?" She asked. She got some test tubes out and began setting the testtubes in racks. And then took out the blood vials and looked to them.
" The incident that results in my mates genetic engineering. Our ship uncovered the remains of some ancient collective that had turned on itself in a civil war. Turns out two of the pieces we found were some sort of psychic copy of the two commanders. They got activated and most of the crew got assimilated including me and my mate. Thankfully a few of us were able to throw off the collectives control and retake the ship. " T'para said as she powered up the computer to start data recordings.
T'San nodded, "I see, wait you and your mate were assimilated?" She put the bloodvial she was holding back in the container. "He didn't mention you were also infected, did the doctors at starfeet medical examined you as well?"
" Yes, most of the crew was and i was one of the first to be assimilated. We thought we were helping that manipulative thing after she took control of the first officer. Turns out she was brainwashing us to do her bidding. She didn't genetically engineer any of us though. " The hybrid replied as she looked at her boss.
T'San picked up the padd where she downloaded the files on. She leaved trough the information. She took out a vial of blood again. She took another padd and started to make notes on it. Then took a sample from it and put in the computer. The turned back to the padd. "Here we go. Close examinations of the other half of the crew was inconclusive....hmmm." She scrolled trough it several times. "Scans, boodtests...nothing?" She looked at the computer to see what came out of it. It was a sample from Xalanth's blood. "There we go, there is the engineered genetics." She pointed to the schematics on the computer. She called the ones from T'Para. She downloaded them to the main computer. Then she opened the blood taken from Xalanth and compared them to T'Para's.
Then she opened brain scans made of the entire crews. "Interesting," she mumbled. She put the padd aside and then saw T'Para staring. "Sorry, I was just comparing notes." She looked back on the main computer. "T'Para, has anyone ever thought of reverse engineering the genes?"
" Not to my knowledge. Why are you asking? " The hybrid responded.
"I want to understand these genes, what they were designed to do. Also I'd like to understand how the workings of these collectives were. This technology is incredible." said T'San.
" I guess they were designed for combat or spying. I'll admit I remember very little from the time I was assimilated, but i'll try and answer any questions you have." T'para said calmly.
"I am sorry, T'Para, I don't want you to get through that again, but if I understand how it works, I maybe able to come up with a cure or undo what has been done to him. I may need to help of our science officer, " Suggested T'San. She thought a moment. "T'Para, would you object to a mind melt?"
T'para was quiet for a while before she responded. " I understand doctor. I won't object to a mind meld if it can help Xalanth though I don't know if it will do anything. My memory goes blank after she assimilated me."
"If there is any thing inside your mind that could help us, we can find it together." She took her hand calmly. "I won't hurt you, T'Para, but if it get's uncomfortable please let me know."
" Don't worry i will. Shall we sit?" The hybrid inquired. She had done a mind meld with Xalanth before, but had never had one done to her.
"Yes, ofcourse." T'San pointed to two chairs next to a table before sitting down herself. "I must warn you, there might be images you don't wish to remember. It's also possible you will see memories that has nothing to with what we are looking for." T'Para sat down across her and T'San put her fingers on her face and closed her eyes. "Your mind to my mind, your thoughts to my thoughts."
T'para nodded hoping nothing embarrassing would be brought up. " Our minds are merging. Our minds are becoming one."
Proving the universe had a very bad sense of humour the first memory to the surface was one of her and Xalanth in a position only mentionable between partners. The love they both felt for each other flowed through them as did the pain as her combadge went off making her pull herself away from the reptile.
The memories swirled and changed being replaced with one of warmth from the warm water as she and a team sank beneath the waves. The shock they found at the artefacts scattered all across the seabed ran though her mind as well as the odd buzz that filled her skull when one of the team unearthed the hauntingly beautiful alien necklace that one of them pulled from the depths.
Again the memories changed as a new one formed. The peaceful sound of federation computers filled the memory as the inside of a temporary storage room appeared. The hybrid was sitting at the computer running reports on the dive. She wasn't alone with T'Avarak another vulcan belonging to medical division and the orion first officer Myllia who were busy checking the artefacts.
T'para wheeled round as an alien light began to fill the room. Myllia was holding the necklace which was the source of a glow. With a flash, the orion turned to face both of them.
"Name and species designation?" asked the Orion almost robotically as she looked intently at T'Avarak, who responded simply, "T'Avarak of Vulcan."
Still holding the doctor's hands firmly, the Orion turned her head to look pointedly at T'para as she repeated, "Name and species designation?"
" T'para of earth." She stated without thinking. She could already hear a faint alien song one she knew was messing with her head.
" I am Overseer Thisbe of the collective. What is this place?"
T'para's memories swirled as the life form now inhabiting the orion told of her tale. Of how here peaceful pacifist collective had been attacked and nearly completely wiped out. Then the signs of pain she put out stating that she needed a collective to survive. T'Avarak volunteered to form one to help her and asked T'para to monitor them on using the medical computer. She nodded and turned activating the screen. The blank screen started glowing with a pale alien light and her memory faded.
" That's as far back as I can remember. From the sensor footage, she used the computer to hypnotists me until i willing wanted to join her collective. It's how they operated. They didn't use brute force they used subversion and trickery to get people to join. " T'para said through the mind meld.
"You're doing great, T'Para. You joined willingly. Maybe you've been tricked you forgot. But if you joined willingly, there should be a memory left of your ordeal. Are you willing to explore further?" responded T'San.
" I'll try." T'para responded trying to let the memories come back. It was hard like trying to push through a thick black oil mixture with her mind. Words crept into her mind.
"Must you do that to her?"
"Yes, I must, her mind must be altered until her admittance into The Collective of Light will be purely voluntary on her part. Trust me, for I am Overseer Thisbe."
The hybrid could remember the next bit. She wished she could forget it. She heard that things voice in her skull as it pushed what made her down into the deeps of her mind and built her anew as nothing more than a brainwashed drone that would happily sit at her feet whilst she did whatever she wanted.
She tried pushing further, but nothing surfaced. " I'm sorry that's as far as I can remember. "
T'San let her go. "I think that is enough. Maybe I should melt with Xalanth as well, what do you think?""
" It may be worth a short. He hasn't told me much. He says he'd rather forget it. " T'para replied as she slowly stood up.
"I understand," said T'San, "But the more we know about this, there is more hope of finding a cure or remedy the situation."
" I'm sure he understands why, but please be careful with him. He doesn't like other people pocking round inside his head other than me." T'para responded.
"I will, but maybe you could be there to set him at ease." Said T'San.
" That would probably help. I'll talk to him next time i'm off duty. Now should we get the medicle bay ready in case we have casualties when we reach the planet?" The hybrid suggested.
"Yes, ofcourse. And T'Para, it is most likely i have to go with the away party to the planet. You think you can handle taking charge of my sickbay in my abscence?" Asked T'San.
" I can handle it. I've helped run sickbay a few times when i was head nurse." T'para replied confidently.
"Excellent," said T'San. "Why don't you go and start with checking the equipment?"
" Will do ma'am. You'll take care of that hubbie of mine when your on the planet won't you?" The hybrid said as he neared the door.
"But of course, I am his doctor." Said T'San. She turned around and smiled a bit before surpressing it again.
