--transport USS Optimum--
Dr Karri, newly minted full lieutenant stood at the windows of her transport. She was hoping to catch a glimpse of her new duty station, but was unsucessful. She sighed. "Guess its inside. I mean, it makes sense. Big sstation over there." she thought to herself just as her ears perked up to let her know that someone was behind her. She spun around a little quicker than the normal doctor, visibly startling the youg ensign who had just arrived
"Sorry about that, old security habit. Whats up?" she asked
"Uh.sorry for sneaking up on you Doctor." he began. "But I have updated orders for you."
"And they would be?" Karri asked.
"Oh right. Captain Williams requests that once you beam in to head directly to sickbay."
"I can do that." Karri nodded. With that the Ensign left and she went back to her "sightseeing" as she called it
---USS Ottawa---
Soon after getting her updated orders Karri did what she was basically told. She wasnt about to disobey the Captain on the first day. So after a few false starts she eventually found her way to sickbay. The doors swished open to reveal a room full of medical personnel, and no CO. "I guess I'm early." she shrugged so she ordered herself a coffee from the replicator nearby and waited.
A gentleman in his early fifties walked over to the new arrival. His rank and uniform clearly showing, but his smile warm and friendly. "Welcome on board, doctor, I am Doctor Robert Williams, I am the science chief. Lieutenant commander but Doctor Williams or Robert will do just fine. My wife, captain Williams will be here shortly, she is held up on the bridge to sign off. Paper work, you know how that goes. She is the new captain of this ship and she got some big shoes to fill. Colonel Ijaan seems to be hard to replace, the crew was quite attached to her." He thought a moment. "And the first officer. Commander Ijaan, I haven't worked much with him, but from what I know he is a good man and has been through a lot. SO yea we also get a new first officer. But having a new doctor as well, might soften the blow."
Karri sipped her coffee. "Yeesh. Paperwork." she chuckled. "Nice to meet you Comma..I mean Robert." she smiled. "Dr Karri, at your service. Just Karri is fine though.."
"Very nice to meet you, Karri. Would you like a tour of sickbay?" He gave her a warm friendly smile.
Karri returned it. " Lead on." she said. She put her coffee into the recycler. The last thing she wanted to do is pur it on something. "Its my first one really. To be a doc in." she chuckled a little. "Been a customer more than a few times though."
Robert nodded as he smiled. "I was the doctor in past, that was before I made the transfer to medical sciences. But I think that is a story for another time." He walked her to her officer and then stopped. "This ship, you must know, has been to an alternate universe. It was designated by Colonel Ijaan as Paranormal Universe. A non corporeal creature, known as Umbra, has installed new technology to the ship. We are still analyzing the data, but as far as we can tell Starfleet hasn't given us a new vessel. As one of the ships at the front line, these new technology will be what we need to win the war. And we hope by keeping it here we can replicate some of it's technology to equip the other ship in the fleet with." He then stopped and put his hand on the doctor's shoulder. "You did hear we are now in a state of war, right?"
"I did." Karri nodded, taking in the whole "paranormal" story. "I took the trip over to familiarize myself with the history. At least a little bit." she said, looking at Robert. "As for war, I did know a little bit of conflict was brewing. But I didn't know it was that bad. I haven't been out of school long though. Used to be security before."
"A year ago, one of the Gamma's quadrant super power, called the Crescent been in to our system. When they left the system they attacked a starfleet vessel. The Vessel was destroyed. It carried an admiral. An admiral dear to all of us. Admiral Le. He was also the father of the Captain. It's an official declaration of war to the Federation." He walked in to the CMO's officer and then picked up a padd from the desk and handed it to her. "This is most of the information we have on the Crescent." He looked around the place. Other than that it is a standard place. If you need any help you can ask myself or Doctor Alyssa Walker. Doctor Walker is the Ship's psychiatrist. She leads the counseling department."
"Wow. These guys sound meaner than the Dominon." the Caitian said, taking a look at the padd.
"They are, as far as I can tell. And they are more ruthless as well." He looked at Karri a moment. "I know Caitian's have telepathic abilities, I should warn you, these Crescent have incredible mental abilities. From reports I read some of them are capable of destroying the insides of a living being with just their mind."
"Well, thats comforting." Karri said, a hefty tone of sarcasm in her voice.
"Well I think you have the short version of our situation. Do you have any questions?" Robert asked.
She flashed to medical mode for a second. "Has anything helped with the psychic attacks? It seems to me that Vulcans and Betazoids would be at risk as well.."
"That is a very good question." Robert said. "Ever since we returned from the alternate reality, this ship has been fitted with a second shielding. It's technology from the alternate reality. The second shielding they developed was to protect an entire ship from the mental abilities on the ship. So far no other technology has surfaced. But I hear that Doctor T'San and Lieutenant Jexen on the Shanghai are currently working on a device that should block the effects one on one with the crescent. I can have their research notes send to you. I have them in my office. It really shows promise."
"It'll make for some good reading to say the least." Karri began, half joking. "That sounds good, Robert. Thank you."
"Excellent, I will send it to you now." Robert walked out of sickbay and headed to his office.
