Mission:
[ USS Shanghai] S1E8 Light of the past.
Location: Senior staff lounge
Timeline: MD002 0700
Xalanth winched as his shirt tugged on the regenerator patch of his damaged arm. He still felt awful after his descent into the vault. Every part of him still stung even with the painkillers flooding his body.
Still with the sphere and the believed patient zero they may be on the road to solving this whole mess. Picking up the report he made his way to the briefing room. It wasn’t good. The sphere wasn’t responding to anything they were doing and patient zero had banged on the storage bay doors for nearly an hour before it passed out due to lack of oxygen after security vented the atmosphere.
Still, he took his place at the head of the table as he waited for everyone to arrive. His own staff and the ones on loan from the other ships.
He flexed his fingers of his damaged arm. At least he could still move them even if they hurt like hell.
Thorrin stepped into the conference room and took his seat to the right of the Captain. There was a little less bounce in his step as he was filled with trepidation about the impending mission.
Doctor Vanth had barely gotten changed and settled into hir quarters on the U.S.S. Saigon when s/he had been hailed and informed s/he would be transferred to temporary assignment on the U.S.S. Shanghai. S/he’d had just enough time to pack a few things and get dressed into hir slightly modified current medical uniform. After a short sojourn over to Aventine-class ship and reporting in to the duty officer – whom promised they’d see to it that hir one bag got brought to sickbay – s/he’d been informed to report directly to the observation lounge, for some form of meeting.
The Caninoid doctor entered the room completely oblivious, having never even met neither the CO nor XO – as s/he was accustomed to prior to getting down to business – s/he stepped up to the table where s/he presumed both of them sat now. “Doctor Vanth, reporting as ordered sirs.” Gazing upon a large Gorn-like person and a Humanoid, Vanth wasn’t thrown off by either of them. After all Barnum Prime had its fair share of diverse ‘beastinoids.’ S/he stood still, patiently waiting to be acknowledged.
“Ah Commander Doctor Farkas Vanth glad you can join us.” The lizard captain said as he stood up and tried to offer his hand before stopping with a groan as pain shot through him. “Sorry about that. I’d offer to shake your hand, but I don’t think this arm is going to be doing anything for a week. Did sector command brief you on the situation?” he asked politely.
Thorrin extended his hand toward the good doctor. He was reminded of Anticans by the look of the Doctor. “Dr. Vanth welcome aboard. I am Commander Thorrin the XO.” Thorrin interjected before giving the doctor a chance to answer the Captain’s question.
Doctor Vanth nodded to the XO, “thank you.” Looking at hir CO again, s/he acknowledged his question. “No, I’m afraid I didn’t get much information, I’m sorry.”
“Well doctor we have a Federation colony that has been genetically altered by some tech. of a collective we thought long since dead. We have one crew that has been affected, but not as severely as the others. We’ve recovered the artifact responsible; it’s working out how it works that’s the problem.” The lizard replied calmly.
The ‘dog-tor’ was confused; s/he cocked hir head in that way that canines do. “Who’s tech? What do you mean by ‘a collective,’ are we talking about a derivative of the Borg here?”
“The collective of light. They claimed to be a collective that predated the Borg that wiped themselves out through a war with another collective around 20,000 years ago. My mate the closest thing we have to an expert so she should be able to answer any questions you have about them.” The lizard replied.
“Thank you, captain, I guess that’s my cue to take a seat and wait for the meeting to get started. It’s nice to have met you captain.” S/he nodded respectfully and was about to do the same to the XO before taking hir seat, when s/he realized s/he’d unintentionally jumped to conclusions. “Which one is your mate?”
“Lieutenant JG T'para she’s down in the ship’s medbay trying to get the sphere to work. Don’t worry you’ll know who she is when you enter the medbay. She’s the crew member who’s been altered.” the captain replied calmly.
Doctor Vanth wondered what the captain meant by “altered,” but s/he figured s/he’d find out soon enough.
Vanth selected a seat about equidistant from either end, facing in toward the room where s/he could see others as they entered. Something ancient and deep-seeded about hir directed hir posterior toward the wall.
Charlie walked through the parting doors looking to the captain and the new arrival. She was holding a PADD and next to her gaining up was Kerja. The young girl looked around blinking. She was turning 15 next week, so she felt a little out of place with all these people.
Charlie turned to Kerja and handed the PADD back to her. “Thank you, Cadet, for bringing this to my attention.” She then pointed out a seat for the young cadet. “Please sit down, you can learn a lot here.” She said smiling as she made a way to the other seat next to the captain and sat down.
Kerja smiled shy. “Thank you, Major.” She then sat down.
Sandy walked in, coffee in one hand and her mini-PADD in the other. Nodding to those already there she took her seat.

Xalanth gave a polite smile to the faces some familiar and some new. “Welcome to all the new faces. I’m sorry about meeting under these conditions but the universe rarely calls on us at a time of our choosing. First of all, Commander Thorrin how goes the plan to steal the crescent ship?” he asked turning to look at his first officer.
“Everything is in place and ready to go. Captain Shannon, Major Dilucca and I will be undergoing some minor surgical changes to our appearance. We will then take the Crescent shuttle that we have into enemy territory on a recon mission. All that is needed is your go-ahead sir.” Thorrin said with a small smirk.
“Very well you have my go ahead. Just be careful and go armed for bear. The crescent ship may be damaged, but they may have some hidden surprises.” The captain added.
Charlie raised her hand. “Captain, I have been talking to mister De earlier in a communication to the base. I still have my doubts about him, of course, but I thought it would be wise to learn about how they operate and what their culture is like. I know it is commander Thorrin’s, but I would like to ask to take command on board the vessel. Orson told me, though male and female are equal it is usually the female that is in command and not the male. If we wish to blend in, I will have to show them I am in command.” She looked over to Thorrin.
Thorrin nodded his agreement. “It would be a simple task to show them that you are in command. That should not be a problem.” He replied.
Sandy had nothing to add as she knew she would be doing the piloting of the vessel. “I agree with Cmdr. Thorin. The Major should be in command on the vessel,” she added
Doctor Vanth watched and listened patiently. S/he was coming into all this new and had no idea what was going on. S/he didn’t even have enough information to postulate a question. For now, s/he would remain silent unless called upon. S/he wondered if introductions were going to be made by either the captain or the XO.
“Oh, before I forget may I introduce Doctor Farkas Vanth; chief MD from the USS Saigon who is here to help us with the current situation.” the lizard captain said nodding his head towards the new officer.
Sandy looked at the visiting doctor and nodded her head respectfully in his direction.
Elsewhere, Craig was on his way to the Shanghai, a little runabout was taking him from the base to the ship “Runabout 4 to Shanghai“ he said as he relaxed into his chair. Looking to the windows “This is Major General O'Donnaghue can the First officer and second officer meet me at the docking bay” he said over his comms.
Thorrin cocked his eyebrow as this must have been important to be disturbed during the briefing. He turned toward the Captain and silently asked permission to leave. Thorrin then tapped his comm badge. “This is Commander Thorrin, I am on my way.”
The hermaphrodite doctor looked around the room smiling warmly and continuing as if nothing happened. “It is a pleasure to be able to assist. I look forward to meeting each of you in person and getting to work with and to know each of you. I will do my best to run sickbay as you’ve come to expect from your own CMO during my stay here. If you need anything or have any questions, or just need a sympathetic ear,” s/he wiggled hir erect dog-like ears for emphasis, “I practice an open-door policy, please stop on by my office or my quarters anytime. My species are a very social oriented race, and I’m sure I could use the company for my own wellbeing.” There was a light thumping from behind hir as hir tail wagged excited at the prospect of new friends.
