Mission:
[JM New Haven] S1 E2 A New Haven
Location: USS Shanghai Sickbay
Timeline: MD 003 - 0800 08/01/2396
ON:
After their run, John had gone back to his quarters to shower and change into his medical uniform. Charlie had offered him the use of her shower and, while he could have replicated a uniform at her place, he had thought it might lead to something they weren't ready for - at least not right now. If anything such as that happened between them it would be because they both wanted it and they would both know when the time was right. Still, the thought brought a smile to his face as he walked into sickbay.
As he entered, he looked around quickly, taking in everything in. Main sickbay was quiet which was perfectly fine with him. Quiet meant there had been no accidents or illnesses during the night which was a good thing. The only issue they had right now was the Orion woman who still resided in the isolation ward.
He had just sat down at his desk and activated his computer terminal when he sensed the presence of someone in the doorway. Looking up he saw that it was the buxom head nurse, Lieutenant Walker. "Yes Lieutenant...?" he asked, wondering if she was about to bring him a problem.
"Good morning doctor..." she began. "Did you have a pleasant evening?"
'Huh...?' he thought to himself. He had only met his head nurse the day before and he couldn't figure for the life of him why she would be so familiar as to ask about his evening. He thought first to tell her that how his evening had been was none of her concern but quickly realized that even at best it would be rude. So he decided that his best course of action would be to give her a quick, noncommittal answer. "My evening was fine," he said hoping that she would be satisfied with that and go ahead with whatever she had come there to tell him.
"I'll bet it was..." she said with a bit of a smirk.
Okay now this was becoming a bit much. "And what is that supposed to mean? Pearce said, his tone becoming a bit firmer. He was beginning to not like the way this conversation seemed to be turning.
"Nothing much really," she answered. "It's just that about 0630 this morning I was on my way to the lounge for an early breakfast and I just happened to see you and that Marine major - I believe her name is Dilucca - coming out of your quarters and I noticed she was barefoot..." She didn't say any more but her look said everything her words didn't.
'Damn and double damn...!' he thought to himself. They'd been seen! And by possibly the worst person! He had seen a notation in Walker's personnel file that she was an inveterate gossip and he had a sinking feeling that before the day was over that little tidbit would be all over the ship. Perhaps it would be best if he tried to do some damage control now.
John took a deep breath, more to make sure he didn't say anything he shouldn't than anything else, then began to speak slowly and carefully. "Yesterday I treated the major for a broken ankle. If you check the sickbay log you will find it there. She came by my quarters and I examined her ankle to make sure that it was healing properly." It wasn't a lie - he HAD checked her ankle. He just conveniently left out the fact that she had come by the night before. No sense adding that fact in. "That's what happened. Is...That...Clear...? he asked, emphasizing each word.
"Whatever you say, doctor..." Walker said, clearly not believing a word of it.
"Now, was there something I can help you with? he asked.
"No, I just came in to say 'Good morning' " she said in a light tone as she turned to leave.
"Oh Lieutenant, before you go..." he said as she turned and looked back at him. "I might remind you that while it's true that loose lips sink ships, it's also true that loose lips can also get certain nurses on the most unpleasant sickbay duties."
Wisely Walker said nothing but simply turned and walked away.
