Mission:
[USS Shanghai] S1E2: Encounter in the Abyss
Location: USS Juno lounge
Timeline: 05/13/2394 @ 2130 Hours
An hour after she'd sat down at her desk Janie was up again wandering the corridors with a PADD in her hand grumbling to herself about technology and how it was supposed to better their lives not make it impossible for her to get any work done. She rounded the corner without looking up and found herself inches away from the ship's first officer as she came to a full stop. She stared for a second before her brain kicked in. "I'm so sorry sir. I wasn't paying attention."
Bervag was headed to the ships lounge, just to get moving more than anything else. His mind was spinning with paperwork. The Bers symbiont was offering suggestions. The pilot in him chearly didn't like it. He just needed to decompress. Roaming the halls he narrowly missed a collision with the ships Educator. His mind blanked as well. "Funny thing. I was about to say the same." he smiled.
"You were about to call me sir? Or the part about me not paying attention. Cause I really don't think the sir is necessary. Besides I'm a ma'am." Having realized what she said her cheeks flushed and she took a step back from him so they weren't quite so close. "Sorry, that came out before my brain kicked in."
Bervag blushed slightly. Also he let out a small chuckle, he couldn't help it. 'No worries." he said. "It happens." he said, reassuringly. "I was just headed to grab a bite. Care to join me? he asked. He blushed again. "There I go doing it. Sill stands though."
"Uh, sure." Janie blinked and made herself turn so that they could walk together. "I'm Janie, course I know who you are but I don't think we've met."
"Bervag." he replied. "saying "Commander" all the time gets tiring." he replied. "A pleasure Janie."
She smiled. "Likewise." It was difficult though, to think of things to talk about. She suddenly found herself incredibly nervous. "You are a joined Trill?" She asked him though it seemed like a stupid question. "So you have the memories of your previous hosts?"
"Yes to both." he replied, seeing her nervousness. "All the memories. Personality is all me though."
"How long have you been joined? And was it confusing at first? Sorting out all of those different memories? Sorry, that's probably a rather personal question. I've never met a joined Trill before." Janie's voice quieted.
"No worries. About six years if memory serves. And yeah, it was an adventure." he replied. "I spent some time on the homeworld after joining. They provided training on how to cope with it.." he smiled. "Other than that, I'm pretty much a normal guy."
"Oh well that's good." Of course they would provide training. Starfleet wouldn't let him be first officer if he were wandering around confused. She thought it must have been difficult to go through both Starfleet and the Symbiont selection process but she didn't say this out loud.
The pair eneterd the lounge and found a table. Bervag was enjoying this little talk. he loved to meet new people, but didn't really want to talk about joining. although he was thankful for the interest. "So, Janie. What about you?" he asked, showing genuine interest.
"Oh nothing nearly as interesting," she had a feeling she'd somehow made him uncomfortable. "Just plain old human. Born and raised on Earth, Montana. Joined the fleet when i was old enough, found myself here after a couple of detours. I like kids obviously, but it's more than that. I love learning. I find it fascinating to put a spark in someone to go out and discover things for themselves."
"Montana, really?" Bervag perked up. He'd never been there, himself. That was on his bucket list as Bers hasn't either. "Love learning? Me too actually, to be honest. I believe you learn something new every day. Part of the reason I became a pilot, to go new places." he beamed.
"Oh you're a pilot?" That was something she hadn't known about him. "I spend most of my time behind a desk, but I wouldn't mind seeing a bit more of the universe, outside the minds of my students . . . sometime." She smiled at him. "Montana is great, I will admit. Beautiful."
Bervag smiled back. "Maybe a possible shuttle ride in the future?" he offered. "You can show me Montana in the Holodeck?"
"Deal," Janie said before she'd thought about it at all. What was with her tonight? One near miss in a corridor and suddenly she was following this man around without even thinking about it. She reached up to rub her temple quickly. When the waiter came by she ordered an apple cider thinking the last thing she needed was anything with alcohol in it.
Bers ordered an Orange Juice. The Bers symbion was speaking to him, expressing approval. Bervag didn't know what was going on. All he needed to know was he was enjoying Janie's company. And that was just fine with him. He just felt like he'd belonged there, right at that moment.
"Do you like human food?" she asked curiously when she'd ordered orange juice. "And this is a silly question but what's your favorite color? I know it has no scientific basis but I've heard of this personality typing based on the colors you choose."
"I dunno. I'd guess i'd have to say Brown for some reason."
"People who like brown are supposed to have stamina and patience, they tend to be very solid and substantial, conscientious, dependable, steady and conservative. They're not supposed to be impulsive, and may be inarticulate and tactless but they love responsibility and are reliable and kindly." She grinned at him. "More than you wanted to know I'm sure. But you didn't answer my question about human food."
"Oh, right. I happen to love human food actually. Very fond of Italian and American foods." he smiled. "Italian is my favorite though."
Janie nodded. It was funny to her how most species she'd come acrossed like Italian food. She took a deep breath. "I enjoy trying new types of food, but not Klingon, could never stomach it." Janie felt like she was rambling on like an idiot. "Sorry, I get nervous and I start talking."
Bervag just smiled. He was getting used to it. He shuddered at Klingon food. "I heard that. Klingon food, blech." he smiled. "Had a caitian salad once, wasn't bad."
"Really?" Janie tried to picture what that might have been like. She shook her head. "Never boring when one has so many races to study. So . . . . when you're not being the first officer what do you like to do in your free time?"
"You can usually find me reading or in the holodeck. I love to act out old Earth movies sometimes." he smiled. "Just generally enjoy life."
"What kind of movies? I love watching old science fiction movies. The stuff people thought they would have in the future, it highly amuses me." Janie turned sideways in her chair and crossed her legs. She leaned a little closer with her elbows on the table and her chin resting on her hands.
"Classic sci fi. Old Earth comedies too. Just did Ghostbusters on the Defensia." Bervag. "It is cool to see the different writers versions of the future. Some were pretty close to the mark." he said, posture relaxing, left elbow resting on the table.
"True, sometimes they did get it right. I also like old romances but I'm sure you wouldn't be interested in those. Jane Austen was particularly interesting to me."
"Don't know. May surprise you." he smiled.
Janie grinned. "I'll tell you what. Tomorrow night I'll reserve some time on the holodeck and I'll torture you with Emma. If you're still sitting there by the end of the night then you've earned another date." It was a bit forward for her but he was the one who asked her out for a drink seconds after they'd met.
"Sounds like a plan." Bervag grinned. "Looking forward to it!" Bers agreed too. It just felt right.
