1,950 words; about a 10 minute read

Mission: [USS Shanghai] S1E2: Encounter in the Abyss
Location: Holodeck
Timeline: 05/13/2394 @ 23:00 Hours

Harry was having a hard time focusing he left sickbay. Kerja was out cold, and so many emotions were pouring through his mind. He felt helpless, he needed to blow off some steam. He walked over to the turbolift and left deck 16 and headed towards Deck 6, and walked into the holodeck, according to the computer, it was available. He walked into the holodeck. "Computer load training program pie beta 6, difficulty level 7." Said Harry as the holodeck disappeared and a training dojo appeared along with several Klingons. All in aggressive stances. Harry smiled as

The Klingons started to approach him, trying to encircle him. Harry started to fight off the two flanking Klingons on the right side, and completed a summersault to get away and the enclosing circle. He started to engage two of them, while the others were trying to reposition themselves. He managed to take out the first Klingon.

Charlie just got off duty. She had some holodeck time planned. She walked up to the control panel, only to find there was already a program running. She walked in to the room, only to find the captain sparring. She crossed her arms and just watched as Harry took out one Klingon after another.

Harry's form was a little sloppy, it was clear he was distracted, the last three Klingons had picked up on weakness, and he was on the defensive. He was very annoyed at himself. He did not noticed Charlie walking into the room. He was focused on the three holographic Klingons, he was trying to control his breathing to get back on focus. Two Klingons were trying to flank them while the third came directly at him. He kicked the Klingon in front of his and rolled to the right, to catch the Klingon out of position, and stabbed him, meanwhile the other flanking Klingon was about to strike him, when Harry got his batleth up to block the shot.

Still in a compromising angle, he swung his batleth and took out the legs of the Klingon facing him directly and stabbed him. Then it was one on one, the Klingon came in and Harry locked batleth's with him and was able to de arm him. The Klingon was defeated. First round was very sloppy and he knew it. He needed to focus better, before he could call for round two a shadow appeared.

Charlie just stood there and watch him battle. She noticed his distraction and she wasn't sure what was going on. From his technique she could tell Harry was a very strong opponent, but he seemed to make mistakes. He won the fight, but he could've done better. When he finished the last Klingon she put her hands down and walked up to him. Apparently she startled him as he turned around quickly and swung his sword to him. She reacted quickly by ducking while moving backwards. She got back up and stopped his arm as it automatically swung back at her.

His reaction was instinctive. He thought she was a Klingon at first. He was not expecting anyone else to be in the room. This was not a group reservation. He noticed she was able to block his advancement. "Evening Captain, nice move. Not that I am ungrateful to have the pleasure of your company, but if I may ask; what are you doing here?" He asked, a little puzzled why she was in the holodeck.

"Well, sir, I wanted to ask the same thing, I had this room booked for the evening, but it seems the room double booked." She replied. "I didn't mean to disturb you, I will leave you." She turned around and wanted to leave the room.

"What's that look for?" He asked. Noticing she wanted to say something. He assumed it was about his sloppy technique. He debated about walking away, and creating separation, but he found himself intrigued by the fact she was able to block his move with little hesitation. Then he remembered she is a marine and been trained in hand to hand combat.

Charlie took the batleth and walked to the center of the room. She looked to Harry a moment. "Well, I think you know very well how to do it right, sir. But if you insist. Computer begin round two." Klingons appeared and one attacked her immediately. The Batleth wasn't her weapon of choice, but she has been trained to use it. She was quick and not slugging. She took down the Klingons one by one as if she has been doing it all the time. When she was done she looked panting at the captain holding her sword forward.

"You do well, first time holding a Batleth?" He asked. He had his batleth by his side. He raised his batleth, and then threw it down. He walked closer to Charlie. He was not sure what she was going to do. He was not sure, what he was going to do or say. He did not want to fight her. He was mainly curious how good she. And he was impressed by her skills, at hand to hand combat.

Charlie looked to her sword. "I have trained with the batleth at the marine academy, it's not my weapon of choice, but it handles well." She said. She looked to the captain. She didn't know if he was challenging her to a fight. She didn't feel like fighting her commanding officer. She dropped her batleth as well. "Sir?"

"Captain," he called out.

Harry walked a little closer. "Not bad form," he said as he called out. "Computer load program level 8 no batleths." He wanted to see how good she really was.

10 Klingons appeared, He charged after five on the left side, beginning hand to hand combat. Now that Charlie was in the room. He was trying to show off a little, and he was frustrated. He began to use his hand to hand combat skills, they were no wear near the level of Charlie's but he hoped she was impressed, He managed to take out two Klingons with little easy. But the numbers were a bit much for one person. He looked to see if she was going to help. "A little help would not hurt," he called out to see what she was going to do.

Charlie grinned, not what she had in mind for the evening. She charged two Klingons from the other side. With ease she got them down, she quickly got on to the next. Hand to hand was really her strong suit. She turned around to see the captain finish his last Klingon. "How does it feel for you, sir?" She only asked as she could see the frustration in his fighting. "Any better?"

Harry was trying to catch his breath. For her hand to hand was simple, he could tell she felt more at ease. He was impressed by technique. "You’re amazing," he said, with a slight chuckle.

She laughed a bit. "Thank you, sir, so if you want to know what a marine does when she is not deployed...It's not just laying around on her bunk." She wiped a bit of sweat from her face. "I think you could use a break, sir. How about drink at the local establishment?"

"A drink? Are you asking me on a date, Captain?" He teased with a big smile.

She laughed. "No, sir, I was just offering refreshments, you look like you could use them."
"Pitty, I like dates, especially from a lovely lady like yourself." He said, expecting she was going to reject this hint. But he was trying to be a little flirtatious, he could not help it. It was second nature to him. But he was off on his game tonight. In combat and in social interaction.

As a marine she wasn't used to this behavior. She was trained to follow orders, there was no flirting or messing around at all. And now that she had people under her command, she would do her best to refrain from this sort of behavior. But for the officers it was a bit different she would imagine. There was no strict rule again fraternizing. She didn't know at first how to respond to his flirtatious compliments. "I am sorry, you must find me stiff as a Vulcan, I am just disciplined from fraternizing. Specially with my superior officer." She explained.

Harry stood right in front of her. "All work and no play, is no fun, and please after hours or in privacy call me Harry." He said, as he took a small breath and went on to say. "Captain, I am not sure what to say, most ladies usually accept or reject advancement. But in all of my time, no one has explained to me, why they do not fraternize, I respect that, but if you do not fraternize, how do you release tension? How do you become close to anyone?" He asked in a softer voice, looking her directly in the eyes. Her face was so beautiful, he could get lost in her eyes.

Charlie didn't thought of that. The people she was most close to were the people in her squad. She never really made time to make friends. She put all her effort and time in to her career and training. Why was that again? Her tough childhood with her mother never around and her father tough on her. Always trying to get more out of her then she thought she was capable off. She finally said, "I don't know, si...I mean Harry. I just never put much thought in to it. Never felt it was important, I guess." "Your important, and that's not a line.

Everyone on this ship is important. Never think your not, important! I think your very pretty, and your dedicated to your work and to your crew, in some one you remind me of me in that way. But we differ on social interaction. I happen to know for a fact marines love to party. But I do not want to make you feel uncomfortable." He said, realizing that he laid it on thick to her. Part of of it was a pick up line, part of it was sincere. 100% of it was not his typical behavior. What type of affect did she have on him? He wondered?

"Oh no, I don't think that way, I just think it's not important for me to be close to someone." She looked away as she sighed. "I also know about those marines. But if you can believe it, I never attended a party. Early to bed, early to rise. Day in day out." She said.

"Where is the fun in that? I love dedication and commitment, but if you do not mind," he said as looked at the room and wanted to change the scenery. "Can I change the program, maybe a stroll in the big city, maybe a chance to talk and get to know one another? If we go to the bar together, the crew will talk. It would not bother me, but it may bother you, what do you think?" He asked, hoping he did not lose her with his question.

She shrugged. "Sure go ahead." She said.

"Computer load Anderson pie beta 3 program." He said as the scenery changed to Local Street in New Orleans, with a classic 21st century theme. "I hope this better?" He asked. He wanted a place that was not so threatening or to romantic. He wanted a fun place to go.

She looked around, she didn't know the scenery, but it seemed alright. "It's fine." She just said.
