1,372 words; about a 7 minute read

Mission: [USS Ottawa] S1, E3: The True Way
Location: Gabe's Workshop
Timeline: 5/21/2394 1300

"Computer, Search Database for non-corporeal Entity known as Umbra." Gabe said, leaning into one of his workbench's cupboards.

"No such entity found." The computer replied seconds later.

He shook his head as he pulled out a heavy looking case, "Well of bloody course." He muttered as the case slammed down heavily on the meal workbench.

"Okay, forget that." He said as he opened the case, "Refine search to non-corporeal Entities know to be able to possess Humanoid bodies, without the host knowing." He carefully began to remove the trays from the case, placing them one by one on the bench.

He took a focusing crystal from one of the trays and held it to the light as the computer started to list his search results. He'd taken to collecting odds and ends a few years ago, you never knew what would come in handy later down the line. Once he was sure the crystal was undamaged he placed it next to the unfinished shell of a non Starfleet pistol.

"Computer, transfer data to monitors one through twelve. Update each on my command."

Gabe sat down at the work bench and took a shot of whiskey before setting to work. For the next hour listened to the computers results while updating each monitor with results that seemed relevant. As he listened he continued to build the weapon. Once he'd finished he sat back and poured himself another shot.

He carried the pistol over to his desk and checked it's size against the recess he'd built into the side, once he was happy he'd sized everything right he placed the pistol back onto the workbench and began to gather the parts needed to build the power cell.

After the events in Gabe's workshop, Ellie felt she owed Gabe a little explanation. She had called Jazin to meet her outside of Gabe's workshop. She wasn't sure if she could do this alone. When she saw Jazin come around the corned she felt happy and a bit scared at the same time. As he stopped in front of her she took a deep breath and the said, "Jazin, something has happened..." She bit her lip and then continued, "Umbra is here." She said. "She took me over whilst I was here, talking to Commander Sharpe."

"Oh wow. Are you ok, Ellie?" He asked. Then he remembered what she said about Sharpe. His heart sank. "What happened? Do you remember?"

Ellie shook her head. "No, all I remember is when she let me go I was holding his face in my hands. That's how I know she over took me. I have no clue what he was thinking at that time or what she wants. I don't even know why she is here and what she wants with Gabe. But I thought we owe him an explanation. I wanted to talk to him now." Ellie pointed to the door.

"I agree, Ellie." They walked over and rang the chime. "He needs to know." He said as he rang the chime.

"Computer, pause playback" Gabe said as he heard the door chime. "Enter." He added as he pulled a second case out from under the work bench.

Jazin walked in, Ellie behind him. Jazin waved."Hello." He said. Jazin had a serious look on his face. "Jazin Ijaan" he said. Just in case they hadn't been introduced, as he couldn't remember. "I hear you'd been visited by a....friend..of ours"

As the pair entered, Gabe grabbed a tricorder and flicked it open, placing it on the bench, pointing in the pair's general direction.

"Somehow I get the feeling ya using the term very loosely, but yeah Umbra and I have met." Gabe replied, placing another set of trays on the bench. "Far as I can work out thus far it's some form of non-corporeal entity, though that's about as far as I've managed ta get, turns out such a creature, named Umbra isn't known ta the Federation Database."

Ellie nodded. "That's because she isn't from this reality or this world. Jazin and I were trapped in an alternate version of this world. And Umbra is not just non corporeal, she is para normal. And she is very old, I don't know how old she is exactly, but she is at least 5000 years old."

"Now things start ta make sense. Paranormal ya say... much as I hate ta admit it that's a new one on me." Gabe said, "Gonna need a whole new research line for that one."

Gabe glanced down at the tricorder's screen, noting no change in the readings.

"You probably don't find anything about it in the database," Said Ellie. "I am sure that Starfleet intell is still going trough all the data that we brought back from the alternate universe. But I did made copies before I handed over everything to starfleet intell." She grinned as she looked to the ground. "Computer, open up files from Ellis Sheppard, file name alternate universe." The computer tjirped. She continued, "Computer, display all information regarding Umbra. Security code, Sheppard Alpha 2, Beta 110."

The twelve screens that lined the walls updated to show the data Ellie had brought up.

"Thus far I've just been going through the database, looking for anything that fit with we experienced at the time or anything that stood out, this is going to make things a lot easier." Gabe stroked his beard as he started to memorise the data. "Some interesting information here."

He knew he'd have to make some changes to his plans, but at least now he had something concrete to work with.

Ellie looked to Gabe's confident attitude. He wasn't scared at all. She was a marine, she was trained to face death on a daily basis and Umbra managed to break her like this. She looked over to Jazin. She felt that security again when she went out to rescue her brother. Maybe there was a chance to beat this thing. Something she overlooked. Something the alternate Starfleet overlooked.

Jazin could see Ellie was more than shook up. That shook him up. She'd been his fearless rock through 9 years of Hell. But then again, Umbra couldn't be ignored. He turned to Gabe. "Yeah. You can see our paths have crossed." he offered a weak smile.

Gabe nodded, deep in thought. Information, ideas and plans running through his head. The problem now was He'd never looked into the paranormal before, so his knowledge was limited. That he could fix quite soon, but since the paranormal wasn't really a thing in their universe, real data would be hard to come by.

"Yeah a lot of things started ta make sense. I get it now." He said to Ellie, "Sorry I took me so long ta understand."

He picked up the incomplete pistol and slid it into the housing in his desk, pushing it so the panel slid back into place, hiding it from view.

"I intend ta do what I can ta help, but i'm afraid it may take some time... Like I said the paranormal isn't exactly my strong suit." He added, his voice flat. He hated admitting his ignorance but they deserved to know.

"We do understand, we were quite overwhelmed ourselves when we got in to the paranormal universe, as I like to call it now," Said Ellie, "There is quite a lot of information on the paranormal universe in the files I just gave you. Including some interesting information on technology they used in the paranormal universe to fight the paranormal, maybe that can come in handy to you."

"And us being Security and Marine respectively, Im sure we can come up with something between the three of us." Jazin smiled

Gabe tapped a section of his desk and the hidden panel slid open and the pistol slid out. He grabbed the handle and pulled it out cleanly, spinning it around his finger before placing it back on the workbench.

"Somehow I get the feeling I have a lot ta do" He said. "Looks like I have some light bedtime readin'... and here's me almost outta whiskey." He added with a friendly smile.

Jazin smiled back. "I can see what I can do about that last one."
