It was the day after Christmas. And what a great Christmas it had been for Avril and her family. She got to spend time with everyone, before getting her first assignment. “Yes Mom I have to go.” She insisted giving her mother another hug.
“Ten years is a long time.” Sugge2387-2391 Starfleet Academy, Cadet
2391-2394 USS Guinevere, Ensign to Lieutenant JG
2395- USS Juno, Lieutenant JGsted her Mother.
“It is, but this is a great opportunity, for me as well Mom.” Said Avril, as she double checked to make sure she had both bags ready to go. She was in her room, making sure to pack up everything.
“At least you do not have to report in until tomorrow.” Said Sarah, her mother with a sad look on her face. She was happy for an extra night, but sad she was leaving as well.
“You’re going to be fine, so is Dad, Erik and Anna as well, I will call as often as I can.” She suggested, hoping that would please her mother.
“What’s your plans for today?” asked Sarah. Hoping to spend more time with her daughter.
“Next few hours with you guys, tonight I want to beam up to ESD and get a sneak peak of the USS Juno, before I board her tomorrow.” She suggested with a big grin on her face.
“You’re going to spend the next 10 years on the ship, do you need to see the ship tonight?” Asked Anna as she walked into the bedroom.
“Yes,” said Avril as she continued to stuff her bags with little items from her home. She smiled and went on to say, “I promise we will get to spend time together today, my meeting with starfleet command is only one hour, I will have more down time tonight.”
“Do you think I can come up with you and see the Juno?” Asked Anna, waiting to see what Avril and her mother were going to say to that.
“Once I board, I will see what I can do about getting you aboard for a little tour and maybe help me unpack, in no doubt will be my tiniest living quarters, ever.” She expected to get a tiny single living quarters. She had a grin on her face.
“I wonder what it’s like, living on a starship.” Wondered Anna, she never had a reason to be on a starship, she was raised on Earth. Both of her parents were school teachers and Erik and Anna were twin’s just starting junior year of high school.
“A cramp small mini city, the Juno will have a crew of 853 personal. On twenty four decks, so it will feel cramp at times, I assure.” She said with a wink.
“Why would agree to live like this, for 10 years?” Asked Anna.
“A chance to explore the unknown. I have always wanted to reach out and touch the stars. It’s my dream, and someday, who knows maybe I will get a command of my own.”
Sarah started to feel like she was being left out of the conversation. “Ten years in deep space, they better give you a command of your own. One that stays closer to home.” Suggested Sarah.
Avril laughed a little. “We will see Mother.” She said, grabbing her mother’s hand gently.
“I hope so sweetie.” Said Sarah, as the scene starts to fade.

The doorbell rang. It was Avril at the door. She had just come back from her meeting with Starfleet Command liked promised she was going to spend more time with her family before she left on her ten year mission with the USS Juno.
Erik opened the door to his older sister. “Hey,” was all he said, as he allowed her to enter the residence.
“Just Hey,” she commented with a grin.
“Yep.” Stated Erik.
Sarah, Anna and Marcus all walked into the living room from the kitchen area. Avril smiled at them as they all took a seat on the couch. “Hey guys.” Was all that Avril, could think of to say at this very moment. It was clear they all wanted to spend time with her. She walked over to the loveseat couch and sat down, getting ready to listen to a lot of rambling about how much they were going to miss her.
Instead, they started to ask her about her assignment, if she was ready, they were trying to make it easier for her to leave. Erik was very quiet, offering the occasional comment. But mainly being quiet. Sarah and Anna were doing most of the talking.
They chatted for a couple of hours, eventually deciding to play a few board games. This went on for a bit, Sarah made lunch, and more time had passed. Avril was very happy everyone was together for her last day on Earth.
Even her aunt Julie Anders stopped by to see her. It was very nice to have everyone together one last time she thought. Around 1900 hours she got ready to head up to ESD, putting on the uniform. She was trying to get use to the way it felt. Plus if she was going to the station, she should look the part.
Just a couple minutes before 2000 hours, she said her goodbyes. Grabbed her bags, placed them on her bed, so they would be ready to go in the morning, and requested to beam up to ESD.
