Mission:
[JM New Haven] S1 E2 A New Haven
Location: Captain's Quarters
Timeline: Current
Janie hesitated outside Bervag's quarters. She was pretty sure that he didn't know she was on board and she'd asked everyone she'd come across to keep it that way. Guys like surprises too right? It had been one hell of a year since she'd seen him in person. Her parents weren't speaking to her and that was a big thing. She felt an ache in her chest when she thought about it. But they were being stupid, not her. So what if Bervag was Trill, it didn't make him any less of a sweetheart or a good man. If they only took the time to get to know him they would see that.
She pressed the chime and stepped back as she tried to squash any nerves and stray thoughts that said maybe he wouldn't be happy to see her, that he might have moved on.
"I'll be right there" Bervag called out as he perked up from his couch. His uniform was draped across the chair, and there it would stay. After endless meetings he didn't really want to move more than he absolutely had to.
So there it stayed as he went to the door, sans uniform jacket. He pressed the control and the doors swished open. Bervag stood there, not believing his eyes. "Janie?!"
"Yes . . . Hi," she smiled. "I managed to get stationed here. Look at you, in charge of everything. I know it's a surprise, I probably should have called." She said all this very fast and then sucked in a breath, waiting for some kind of reaction after the astonishment wore off.
"It's a surprise all right." He smiled. "But a good one. I am sure glad to see you! Come in." He said. "Something to drink? Eat?"
"No," she shook her head. "I'm okay. Just tired. I haven't even seen my quarters yet, I thought I would come see you first." The truth was she wouldn't have been able to sleep without first seeing him and making sure things were still good between them. "How are you?"
"Frazzled." He laughed. "Whoever said "It's lonely at the top" was right" he grinned. "I've missed you since Captain Anderson said you'd transferred."
"I missed you too," Janie smiled and hugged him. "Want to check out my new quarters with me or did you have plans?"
"Lead on" he grinned. He grabbed his commbadge off his jacket and put it on his red shirt.
"You can tell me where I should put things as I unpack." Janie took his arm and leaned up against him. He didn't try to push her away or tell her that he was seeing someone else. It was nearly like told times, like they hadn't been apart. "Tell me everything that's happened to you since I left."
"Well, I got promoted. Didn't see that coming. Expected to get the Juno to be honest, but that wasn't to be. So Commodore Martinez gave me his station, heaven knows why. Been hanging around with Dan and a Trill woman who'd just been joined. Kinda being there to help her. And now It seems im going to have to officiate a wedding." he laughed. "I'm so glad to see you."
"You keep saying that." She grinned at him, stopping in the middle of the corridor. "I missed you too." She kissed him. "But I have some bad news. My parents don't approve of you because they're bigoted idiots. So they're not speaking to me. But I don't care, i'd rather be with you than talk to them."
"Me? What's wrong with me? Or is it Trills in general?" he asked.
"Nothing is wrong with you, not that I've been able to determine. It's just that they don't want their daughter seeing anyone who isn't human. I suppose they don't want grandchildren with spots. Honestly I don't think they like me being in Starfleet either."
"They just need to meet me." he smiled. "I mean, Jadzia Dax and Worf. If the house of Martok could accept a Trill, your family can." he said.
"I don't know that it will make a difference, but maybe someday they'll come around. I might have to marry you first." The thought made her angry again and sort of sad. She'd always wanted her father to walk her down the isle. "But," she said changing the subject, "It's not like we have to worry about any of that just yet." Approaching her quarters she typed in the code and led him inside. "See, totally bare. Any suggestions?"
"Hmm." Bervag said.
"That's helpful," Janie giggled. "I'll figure it out." She looked around. There was just the basic furniture but at least there was a place to sit. "Do you want something to drink?"
"Just some coffee I guess, Janie. Anything for you? I'll get it." He said. "Could use some blue maybe." He laughed.
It took Jane a moment before she realized what he was saying. "Oh! Blue for the room, I thought for a moment you wanted blue coffee. I had no idea what that was." She shook her head. "I'd love some lemonade," she finally responded to his question. She sat down and put her feet up and watched him with a smile on her face.
"Coming right up, Janie." he said.
"Thanks," she made herself comfortable on the couch, making sure there was enough room for him to sit down next to her. The truth was, it had been a while since they were in the same room together and now that she was there she wasn't sure what to talk about. Maybe he had some ideas.
"So, how have you been?" He asked.
Janie shrugged. "Surviving." She answered honestly. "Been a rough few months." First having to leave him and then fighting with her parents. She hoped there was a rainbow on the horizon because she was tired of the rain.
Bervag nodded "I'm sorry to hear about your troubles, but I'm here for you if you need it." He said, hugging Janie. "I mean it"
"Nothing you can do except offer moral support, but I appreciate it anyway. I made my decision." She snuggled into his arm and closed her eyes as the warmth spread over her. Janie let out a small sigh.
