Mission:
[JM New Haven] S1 E2 A New Haven
Location: Dan & Nidria's bar and lounge
Timeline: MD001 0900
It was neat to have a shoreleave again. But she didn't feel there had been much action since they left Risa. And the closest they got to action was on the Dragonian colony. Things were a little tense after that. Alyssa had gotten out of her uniform and slipped in to a nice dress. She heard the base was setting up shop, bit she heard two civilians managed to set up a bar lounge in several weeks. They were on the Shanghai before and were now on the base.
Walking on her ballerina flats she, made her way over the base's boulevard. She stopped in front of the bar. She looked at the name that was printed on the window glass. Dan and Nidria's bar and lounge. From what she heard of it, the owners were a Vulcan chef and a Trill bar manager. She had to see that. She walked in to the bar. It seemed she was a bit early as the bar had just opened this morning. There weren't many people. She liked what they did with the place. You wouldn't believe you were still on a federation facility. She smiled.
Nidria had just set up all the table, and then went to take care of the only customer she had, when Alyssa walked in. She turned around. She wasn't wearing her uniform, but the way she walked Nidria could tell she was a starfleet officer. She walked up to her. "Hello," She said with a smile on her face. "I am Nidria Rilog. What can I get you?"
Alyssa smiled back, trying not to look her in the eye. "I am lieutenant Alyssa Walker. I am the Ottawa's Psychiatrist and medical officer. And I would like..."
Gabe had spent the last few hours walking the corridors of New Haven, the heavy boots on his feet surprisingly quiet as he walked, building himself a mental map as he went. He was starting to feel the need to stop and rest for a while, He's not been sleeping as well as he should for the last few weeks, an old habit he'd been unable to let go of. It had been a week since he'd even seen the inside of his quarters, preferring to take what little sleep he did get in the small cot he'd set up in his workshop.
"Really should get a full night's rest." He said quietly to himself as he walked past the door to Dan & Nidria's bar and lounge. "Hmm.... now there's an idea."
Unless of course they have a Dress code. He thought to himself, suddenly aware of the sleeveless shirt he was wearing. He shook his head and stepped inside. Surprised to see the place was nearly empty he saw Alyssa sat at a table talking to someone he presumed was a member of the bars staff. He walked over to the pair and gave them both a smile.
"Mind if I join ya Doc?" He asked as he got close.
When she heard the chief engineer interrupting her, she looked up to him, avoiding his eyes. "Of course, Commander," She gestured to a seat at the table. "I was about to order something. Would you like anything?" She offered.
"Tea and sleep..." He said with a chuckle, rubbing the bridge of his nose, "Right now I'll settle for the tea."
He made an effort to avoid eye contact, hoping he didn't look too much like he was doing exactly that. He knew what that was like for her and didn't want to put her out.... again.
Alyssa chuckled. "Yes, tea would be nice, something sweet would be great," She said turning to Nidria.
"And can I get some food as well, or would that be all?" Nidria.
Alyssa looked to Gabe, but a little behind. "Would you like something to eat? We could always do a cheese platter." She suggested looking back to Nidria. Nidria just waited patiently to take their order.
"Yeah, that sounds good, haven't eaten anything other then replicated bacon for the last... well it's been a while. I tend to snack while I work on my own projects." He replied, doing his best not to give too much away.
Nidria nodded and said, "In that case I can recommend you last night's special. I could get you both a plate if you like?"
Alyssa took the menu on her table and looked at it. "What's the special?" She asked curious.
"It's a meat dish with rice and cucumber. It's from the Vietnamese kitchen I believe." Nidria explained.
"Hmm," Alyssa said, "Sounds good, I would like a plate. What about you, Commander?"
"That sounds good, I'll have the same please." He said to Nidria before turning to Alyssa, "And please, it's Gabriel or Gabe, we're off duty after all."
Nidria nodded. "That's coming right up," she said as she walked away to the kitchen.
Alyssa looked at the dark wood table and smiled. "Which would you prefer, Gabriel or Gabe?" She asked as she tapped her fingers playfully on the table. "Or it doesn't matter to you? I am called Alyssa or Lyssa. Either works for me I guess.
"Most people that know me call me Gabe, but to be honest I've never really thought about it too much." He replied, "I guess it's down to your personal preference Lyssa. Yeah that's much better then 'Doc'"
Alyssa smiled, "Yea it does sound good." She could feel her cheeks glow a bit, she was blushing. She looked away, hoping he wouldn't notice. She took the menu again and looked at it, without actually looking. "So, Gabe, what are you doing these days? I haven't seen you in a while."
"Mostly arming my workshop, going over the Colonel's data and attempting to build a device to trap a creature not native to this realm of time and space... proving to be a bit of a difficult job that last one." He said with a slight sigh. "What about you? Is being Ship's counselor all it's cracked up ta be?
"I am a psychiatrist really, so I have a medical degree. I have been running sickbay, but I hear a medical doctor will be taking my place." She smiled. "I liked running sickbay, but the hours as ship's counselor are better." She grinned and looked up to him. "I still like it." She was suddenly looking it his eyes. Her heart was suddenly beating faster as she looked at him. She was expected something to happen. She hoped if she was thinking of something she might com clean, she tried to look away, but somehow she kept looking at him. Looking at his eyes. A few seemed to pass like an eternity before her lips finally shifted to his lips. Still nothing seemed to happen.
He could feel his hair between his fingers as the kiss deepened, somewhere in the back of his mind he knew something was wrong, but he couldn't work out what and frankly right now he didn't care. He stood up and moved around the table, pulling Alyssa closer. He felt her body against his as he kissed her again.
The sound of cups and plates being placed on the table, now again in front of him, snapped Gabe back to reality. He sat confused, and more then a little embarrassed. If Alyssa had looked into his mind, she'd may have seen that and he wasn't able to try and explain that thought. He cleared his throat, a little louder then he'd planned and gave Nidria a nod of thanks.
Nidria silently put the stuff down and nodded to Gabe and Alyssa as she left again without saying a word.
Alyssa looked to the food that was put in front of them and looked up to Gabe again. She couldn't explain it, but somehow not being able to see what was going on, she wasn't sure to be worried or not. She didn't know how her ability worked exactly. Every time she looked someone in the eyes she would get a vision of that person. All the time. It never skipped really. She didn't know what was different today. And she read Gabe's thought once before. She took a deep breath as she was playing with her fork nervously.
"Ehm...Gabe," She finally said, "I am not sure, but I just looked in your eyes, and nothing seemed to happen." She tried not to sound too disappointed. She wasn't sure if she was trying to put him at ease or herself. Nothing happened. Maybe she should be happy about that. There have been times some thoughts were quite disturbing. Maybe she wasn't able to do it anymore. But this thing has been with her for almost 15 years.
Gabe smiled, not his best but given the situation it should do. He take a drink from his cup and cleared his throat again. "Given the timin'." He started, taking time to clear his mind, "I'd say somethin' happened... just not to ya."
"Either that I just had a very... very vivid hallucination." He added, forcing himself to choose his words carefully.
"Not...not for me?" she stuttered. "Did you see something?" She put her hands on her face, "You didn't...did you see.. you...me..." Her face was really flushing now as her face turned red. She didn't expect it could work the other way around as well.
Gabe nodded, glad his beard hid his own embarrassment. "... That would be a good description of events." He said, "The how and why... well I have no idea... though I will say it was good vision."
She picked up her fork and looked at her plate of food. Lyssa didn't really know what to say right now. She started to move her fork around through her food. She just stared to her food. And then she looked to her tea. Finally she sighed and sighed, "I just don't know what to say to that."
Gabe ran a hand through his beard, attempting to find the best words of the situation. "Lyssa..." He began, still unable to find the right words, at least in a language she'd understand. "... Are you alright?" Even as he spoke he chided himself for the weak comeback.
She nodded. "I am fine, Gabe. To be honest, I never realized I had these feelings. And even if I did realize I am not sure if I would have the courage to expose them." She took a bite of her food as she didn't want it to go to waste and then put her fork back down reaching for her tea.
"I know that feeling pretty well." Gabe admitted as he started to eat, "This is pretty good." He added. "I'm more worried about the... transference. Ya seemed surprised it happened... which tells me this is somethin' new."
Lyssa took a sip from her tea. "Yes it is, I never had that happened to me. Usually I get visions from other people. I always knew they were from the other people, as I never saw anything of mine in there. Also I haven't been looking in to it for a while, maybe I should. If it develops like this, I might be able to control it. I don't know."
Yet another strange experience I can't even begin to explain... well at least my return to Starfleet hasn't been boring He thought.
"About the other thing..." He started, before placing his hand on hers, "What, if anythin' do ya wanna do about it?"
She didn't need to be telepathic or emphatic to get what that meant. She took his hand while putting the cup away with the other. Still holding she looked to him and asked, "What do you want to do about it, Gabe?" she wasn't afraid to look him straight in the eyes. There was a short flash in which she saw Gabe get up, just like she imagined it. But maybe this time it was what he was thinking.
"Well I'm pretty sure we both know the answer to that." He said with a smile, "Bit hard to hide that fact now"
In for a penny, in for a pound as Ma used to say. Gabe thought to himself as he stood up and moved around the table. Hmm... Interestin', Like I've done this before. He took her hand in one of his and gently caressed her cheek with the other as he kissed her.
She felt his hand gently cares her cheek before he kissed her. She gently kissed him back. She moved her hand slightly to get her fingers intertwined with his. And her free hand she gently lay on his shoulder. She pulled herself up, while gently pulled him close to her.
This feel familiar. Gabe thought, the vision he'd seen popping back into his head. Better in real life though. As the kiss ended he held Lyssa close to him, He took it as a good sign that she hadn't slapped him.
"Ok, maybe not the best answer." He said, part of him wondering if he'd done the right thing, "But it was the one I came up with."
Lyssa stayed in his arms and sighed. "I thought it was a great answer, well to me it was." She layed her head on his chest.
