Mission: [USS Ottawa] Ending to a legend
Location: Ottawa-A bridge
Timeline: MD001 1700
Tags: Sombra, 3CW4YMF696F

Ellie stepped on the bridge of her ship. It’d been too long. She didn’t want to go back, but Umbra said it was important for her to go back. In the past she wouldn’t have accepted any advice from Umbra, but Umbra had changed. She looked around the bridge. Jazin standing next her chair. Commander K'Loth at tactical. Commander Sharpe at the engineering station. Commander M'jora at the bridge medical station. Lieutenant Walker at science. Ensign Alexander also in the center seat. Ensign O'Donnague at the helm.

Suddenly the lights flickered and from the shadows Umbra appeared, she stood next to the helm station. She didn’t look the dark shadow with piercing yellow eyes. In her human form she looked quite nice. Trustworthy even.

Ellie walked to the center of the bridge and looked around. She swallowed, then said, “Ten years ago, I was the first officer of the original USS Ottawa. With a different crew and a different captain. We returned, more dead than alive. That I would return to that place, I couldn’t imagine. I thank you all for being here. If anyone wishes to leave, they can do so now. I can’t force any of you to be here. I made the old records of the original Ottawa available. When we left, the war in the alternate universe had started. I don’t know what we find when we go there now, and what damage the current para normal energy is causing with Umbra here. If anyone has questions, you are welcome to ask them.”

Doctor M'jora had turned in her seat to face the speaker. S/he listened dutifully, but for the moment felt stumped on whether s/he had any questions. She looked around the room. Everyone was so quiet. She felt like she should say or do something. Suddenly the ending of an ancient Earth movie came to mind, but somehow finding a desk to stand proudly on and announcing, ‘oh captain my captain,’ might fly right over the heads of many present. She smirked softly at the image in her mind. “Sir, should we assume this is a personal mission and not official assignment nor sanctioned by Starfleet? Does the phrase ‘off the books,’ apply here?” ur'Sa was a little surprised at herself, but she supposed it needed to be addressed.

“Doc, not only is this ‘off the books,’ but the book hasn’t been written and doesn’t exist.” Gabe said, turning to face the center of the bridge.

Ur'Sa swallowed hard. She wasn’t sure how she felt about that. She suddenly felt as though butterflies had hatched in her stomach. She turned back to her station to verify sickbay readiness. “Sickbay reporting ‘go.’”

“Ship’s ready Captain, helm’s been updated with the latest calculations and Engineerin’ is looking forward to pulling off a trick that’s never been knowingly done before – at least from this side.” He added

“Security and Tactical are ready sir. Short- and long-range sensors online and functioning,” K'Loth stated.

Ellie nodded to everyone in acknowledgement. She then looked to the now friendly eyeing Umbra. In her human form she was much more inviting than her evil shadow side. Umbra nodded and walked to the main screen. She held up her hands to open the singularity.

“Is it at all possible to make the ride less bumpy than last time?” Ellie asked?

Umbra looked to the singularity she turned a moment and the looks of the black hole changed. Umbra looked to the Science officer. “I think you will detect neutrino emissions.” Then the Wormhole opened up. “I cut the black hole. The wormhole is less evasive, and it won’t pull you in like last time. Make sure you raise your shields and reduce speed to impulse.”

All of this was new to Eleanor, she had just come aboard and she already felt lost, she certainly needed to do some reading and catch up with past events, all that she knew is that if the ship or crew needed a diplomat, then she was there and she would do the best she could, given the circumstances.

Gabe stood from the rear engineering station and walked over to the Captain’s chair.
“Ya sure about all this?” He asked in a low voice, “This ain’t exactly a quick run to Risa and back, we’ll be alone with no back-up and given what happened last time?”

Ellie sighed, “Given all that has happened, no, but Umbra said something about my previous CO. I left Captain Culbertson there, and even though he chose to stay, I have this feeling I have to return. After all that I have been through with Umbra; I don’t trust her. Even with her new look. Yet somehow, I trust Mother Rose, and she said we could trust Umbra now. Umbra made the decision to go back to take care of the Paranormal Universe.”

Umbra stood next to the pilot’s station. She looked a bit over her shoulder to the colonel and the commander. “I have a lot to make up for,” she seemed to be saying to the screen more than to anyone in particular. She turned to the Colonel. “I promised Rosa I’d keep you safe until your return here, so I will.” She put her hands on Eoin’s console. Her hand glowed a second. “Commander Sharpe, could you check your console. Commander K'Loth check your console as well. It is a gift for you. I have fitted your ship with technology used by the Paranormal Universe. That is as far as I can go. I am sure you can use it to fight the Crescent in this universe as well. Commander Sharpe, I know you can somehow figure out how it works to benefit your fleet.”

Ellie turned to her engineering chief and her tactical chief.

K'Loth did exactly that, “Kahless!” he exclaimed. “How is this possible? Our shields and weapon systems have been considerably enhanced. I am not sure how or in what fashion, but it has been accomplished. How I work the new modifications is anybody’s guess,” K'Loth stated.

Doctor M'jora observed from the medical station. She had a lot to take in; this Paranormal Universe was fascinating, and it might explain some unusual occurrences over the years on almost every planet; reports of ghosts, and other things that went ‘bump’ in the night. She briefly wondered what new science they could learn from this place, and if there were any medical technology they could trade.

Ellie turned to Umbra. “It seems you have changed.” She nodded to Umbra. She then turned to Eoin. “Ensign O'Donnaghue, please lay in a course to that wormhole.”

Umbra appeared next to M'jora. “Please, Doctor, don’t be startled. I don’t mean to.” She said. “I am intrigued by your appearance.” She tilted her head a little, looking up and down. “I wonder which seeder created your kind.” He dark eyes moving up and down her fur. A soft breeze could be felt, and Umbra took the form of M'jora’s kind. Her fur was just dark brown almost black.

Jazin sat in the XOs chair, just looking out. He couldn’t help but feel unnerved. But he was also anxious to get this over with. Anything to stop his wife from being a battery.

Doctor M'jora admired Umbra in her new form. Part of her felt drawn physically closer to the being; yet she wondered if it were safe. The color – though rare among her kind – wasn’t a bad choice either. “Hmm… there are several tales of our origins; perhaps I’ll tell you my favorite some time.

Sombra was alarmed, usually any-being would be hard-pressed to sneak so close, so quickly to Alpha without his knowledge or approval. His instinct was to react, but with a silent, sharp, preemptive response from her to stand fast, he did. With a long silent yawn to relieve his tension, he resorted to sampling the air to get a better read off of the being.

Umbra came closer to Sombra and allowed the dog to smell her. She wasn’t really of this plane, so the dog would probably not smell anything from this plane, but more the energy she was emitting. It was still a bit dark, but it was not alarming.

At first, Sombra wasn’t sure how to react. Typically, as a service animal, he was used to getting ignored, so not to be distracted from his job, but upon a subtle cue from Alpha, he ventured closer to them taking several whiffs.

To Sombra, the being smelled of wolfsbane, something with alluring flowers, but dangerously toxic if consumed. He felt conflicted, his instincts told him to keep away, but he didn’t want to be rude, he knew this being couldn’t be the plant he smelled on them. He knew that some beings strangely liked to cover themselves with the scents of other things, so he fought against his instinct and ventured closer, offering his shoulders, back and rump for skritchies…

Ensign Kelly Jones who was filling in for the chief helms, as he was getting a clearance in sickbay, looked over the new additions to the engines and her console. “We are all good to go, Colonel, on your signal!”

K'Loth stood stock still as Umbra transformed. He was slightly leery at this taking place as he was security, and this was all new to him. “Kahless,” he uttered in disbelief.

Noticing the discomfort of the Security, Umbra moved to K'Loth. “Commander, I am not a being of this plane. I have no physical body like yours, but my being can take the form of any corporeal being on this plane. If you like, I can take a form that is comforting to you.” She softly said.

“No, Umbra, your sudden change surprised me. It intrigues me that you can change form so accurately. I am comfortable with your current form, my lady,” K'Loth said bowing in respect.

Umbra shook her head. “Your respect maybe misplaced. My powers maybe impressing, but my past actions aren’t. I haven’t conducted myself honorably in the past, for which I am now paying.”

“My Lady Umbra how can your past actions dictate your life now? Are we not going back to your time?”, K'Loth asked.

“Oh good, now it can shapeshift, so glad this isn’t gonna come back to haunt us.” Gabe said quietly to himself as he reviewed the ship’s upgrades. He was on edge more now than before, with a mere wave of her hand Umbra had upgraded almost every system on the ship and with another she should turn the ship into a garbage scow. While he’d been told Umbra could be trusted he wasn’t about to dismiss everything that had happened over the last few weeks.

“We’re good to go.” He said, doing his best to omit the annoyance he felt from his voice.

Umbra could tell Gabe was annoyed, but she decided to leave him be. She deserved his mistrust after what she had done to him and Alyssa. What she would have done in order to get what she wanted. It was something she had to admit to herself.

“Commander K'Loth, we are going to my universe. Originally, I am from this universe, but I have been so long in the Paranormal universe, as your skipper calls it, the energy that is around there has sorta caught to me. It is that energy, that paranormal energy that I can survive on, which is why I must return. Also, my species exists outside time and space. Time is irrelevant to me. But as I said, I have been to long in that energy I cannot remain in this universe. And my actions are unforgivable on any plane.” Umbra looked a moment to Gabe again. “So that is how it dictates my life now.”

Ellie now got up, as a marine she wasn’t really sitting much on duty. She put her hands behind her back. "Set a course to that wormhole, but slowly ensign.” She remembered the last time she went through one of Umbra’s creations. That wasn’t pleasant. She then sat down. “Shields up!” She ordered.

Kelly pushed on some of the keys on her console. “Going in on half impulse, ma'am.”

Slowly the Insignia-class vessel went into the wormhole. Slowly it moved forward. Nothing could be noticed on the ship while moving through the wormhole. That was until they moved out of the wormhole again after a few minutes.

An energy blast hit the ship and shuddered the whole ships. Immediately Ellie rose to her feet. “Tactical report!”
